In the 3rd
and 4th week, we mainly focus on Psychology and Cognition in Online
Social Network and a lot of concepts and real-life examples are raised in the
lecture, I am aroused by the Hierarchy of Cognition.
Let’s go through the
concept first. In the year of 1983, Kitchener,
K.S. divided the cognition into three levels:
Level 1: Cognition: individuals memorize,
read, write, and perceive media
Level 2: Metacognition: individuals
monitor their own progress when they are engaged in these first-order tasks
Level 3: Epistemic Cognition: individuals
reflect on the limits of knowing, the certainty of knowing, and criteria of
knowing.
So what will happen when
we take these concepts into social network? In my opinion, we can consider the
level 1 as data, level 2 as information and level 3 as knowledge. Today’s
social media provider mainly engaged in the functions of the 2nd
level maybe because the 1st level is too easy and the 3rd
is too abstract to implement.
Actually I find a very
good way to facilitate user experience at a metacognition level: allowing user
to send real-time comments which will appear directly on a video so you can
watch a video and check the comments or opinion made by others at the same
time. As I know, there are three social website (Acfun , Bilibili and Tudou) have
already implemented this kind of function (imitate from the Japanese website
Niconico).
Video-sharing become
much more interactive with everyone watching the same video discussing
together, sharing their own understanding, knowledge and fun, these are all
about the level of metacognition. It sounds perfect but just like the other
social-network features, interaction dose not always bring good things.
Sometimes meaningless messages may cover the whole screen making the viewer
seriously interfered. And it seems to be more frequency that people split up
into two groups and attack each other in the video with such features.
So,
what’s your opinion? Do you think other video-sharing website would improve its
user-experience in this way, why or why not?

The example which you raised in your article is interesting. But I don't think that the comments made by other audiences come out directly on the frame is a good try. Because most time, I just want to watch the video with no distractions. Maybe add a switch of this function or divide the screen into two parts is a good solution.
ReplyDeleteWell, this function already have a switch, actually you can switch on/off the comments at anytime you like,but I don't think divide the screen is a good solution because it will draw away your attention.
DeleteIt is a desire of our human nature to view other people's comments on something we are watching, the traditional video sharing websites like YouTube places viewers' comments under the video, but most viewers would neglect these comments after finish watching the video because reading so many comments seems a waste of time. NicoNico firstly introduced this technology that comments are overlaid directly onto the video, synced to a specific playback time. I love this kind of watching experience, but honestly saying, sometimes you need to use the comments filter to get rid of some annoying comments which you do not want to see -_-!
ReplyDeleteSeconded Hanming's opinion. Danmaku video site fits the word innovation perfectly if you ask me. Originated from NicoNico, it's based on the tsukkomi（吐槽）culture...or should I say it's an important part of the Japan culture? Well in fact communication is part of human's nature, so when we come up to something with 槽点（temptation to comment on it）you can post it with the danmaku system, and then communicate with others that are also interested in it.

In my opinion, if you can offer more choices to your consumers, you are doing the good thing. So maybe I will be happy if I can decide these comments on the screen or not. Still I have to say it's a good try!

ReplyDeleteWow~how interesting the video-sharing!!!Yeah~as you said, it is a good ways for people to communicate with each other when they are watching the same one video.But, as the second picture shows, if the comments are so many that they block the most video screen, it may be serious influence on viewers to watch the normal video.So, it should control the specific position for the comments and the speed of popup and so on.
ReplyDeleteluv this blog so much. Acfun is one of the commonest entertainment website I surf. It is a typical structure of how cognition can penetrate in video sharing. However, some of the comments during the video is somehow not healthy even annoying.

Your blog is very interesting. Sharing our comments on the video is a very amusing idea and I think I would like to try it. But there are still some problems. With all the information on the screen, I can't focus on the video. If I want to enjoy a touching move, I wouldn't use this technology.

Deletevideo sharing, a good topic, when it is combined with the social network, like interaction by text, while watching the same video, how does the result come out? it is not that good as we expect, cause often meaningless messages cover the video screen, anyway, I believe the situation will change in the near future.
ReplyDeleteThe example you raised in the blog is impressive and interesting. I have also experienced such video player called Fengxing in mainland China. However, I believe that this idea and motivation is good, but we have to figure out a more feasible way to apply it. Just as what Yelin said, I feel bad when I saw lots of comments flying in my screen covering the video itself. Though it can be turn off by clicking the button, I think it may be better to separate the video and the comments. Thanks for sharing the example anyway and looking forward to your further work.
ReplyDeleteActually,we have a very similiar idea with you, it is called channeling, we seperate the comments with its feature and do some filtering methods to control the flow.
DeleteThe wave of comments flying through is really impressive and makes the video more attractive. Recognition is simple, but Epistemic Cognition can not only make one learn more things himself, but also help others get a better understanding of the content and discover more details about it~
